Venue Envy

Virgin Hotels opened its first property last month in the heart of the Loop, a culmination of a long-running renovation of a Chicago landmark. The 26-story Virgin Hotels Chicago consists of 250 guests rooms, starting at $209 a night, including 40 single-room suites and two penthouse suites. Located at 203 N. Wabash Ave., the hotel occupies what was the Old Dearborn Bank Building.

Arguably every hotel tries to make guests feel special and at home, but the new Virgin model walks the walk. WiFi is included—download all the movies you want, just as if you were on your sofa at home. Minibar’s come stocked but at authentic prices (charging what you’d pay for a coke as if you were shopping at home), and rooms (or chambers as Virgin likes to call them) come furnished with a patent-pending lounging bed, making them most likely better than what you have at home.

The hotel’s Commons Club is another unique Virgin concept, open to guests and locals, it’s meant to be many things all at once. It’s a place to put away your device and mingle, enjoy a good read, or grab a bite. Virgin Hotels calls it a “dynamic hybrid of bar/lounge, laid-back study and restaurant – all with the vibe of a private members club.” The space promises to be intriguing with a restored ceiling (circa 1928), bar, lounge, library and TV room.

Miss Ricky’s is a classic American diner (opening in March) on the first floor. The vibe aims to be hip, yet “gritty” serving breakfast anytime along with snacks and grilled entrees. Two Zero Three is the hotel’s coffee and wine bar, and Rooftop, an indoor/outdoor space with Chicago city views, cocktails, and Izakaya-inspired dishes. Virgin Hotel Chicago offers several spaces to rent for functions such as meetings, weddings and private parties. The Manor is an ideal space for a meeting of the minds or a large social gathering for 120 people. The Sandbox is a brilliantly intimate space for meeting with colleagues or socializing among peers which seats 75 people. The founders Room is perfect for a collaborative meeting or elegant dinner around a cherished oak table for 12 people.

The Public Media Commons is being described as a ‘playground for the mind and the senses.’ The 9,000-square-foot open-air space is designed to bring people together for experiences that encourage creative thinking and serve the community as an incubator of arts and ideas. The Commons, bordered by the Nine Network, St. Louis Public Radio and the Sheldon Concert Hall in the Grand Center Arts District, will feature large-screen video walls–two stories high–on two sides and the latest audio/visual technology. The site is a collaboration between the NINE NETWORK OF PUBLIC MEDIA, UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI-ST. LOUIS and ST. LOUIS PUBLIC RADIO.

The venue is available to rent starting in mid-September for events both public and private. For more information, please email us at info@evntiv.net.

I am very excited (and a little jealous!) that my colleague Dan Meiners in Kansas City has designed such a cool event venue! For years I have admired Dan’s aesthetic when designing events. His eye for design, color and texture can be seen in his latest accomplishment, Pennway Place.

High-end parking space = High-end event space!

11 11 Lincoln Road is unlike any other event space in Miami… or the world!  This unique venue has soaring 34-foot ceilings with a 360-degree panoramic view of the Miami urban skyline, ocean, and bay.

Bridal couples, bar mitzvah boys and charity-event hosts are flocking to what seems like the unimaginable marriage of high-end architecture and car storage: a $65 million parking garage in the center of the city!

Organizations of all kinds are booking the space for wine tastings, dinner parties, fundraising events and even yoga classes!

Created by a colorful Miami developer and a world-renowned architecture firm, it appears to be an entirely new form: a parking garage that resembles a gigantic loft apartment, with exaggerated ceiling heights, wide-open 360-degree views and no exterior walls. The structure, 1111 Lincoln Road, is so distinctive that tourists and locals alike stop and gawk at its unique posture in the Miami skyline.

The great hall at Chicago Union Station is the ideal location for elegant special events, receptions, and weddings. The hall is considered one of the greatest indoor spaces in the U.S. The 20,000-square-foot Beaux-Arts-style room boasts 18 Corinthian columns, terra-cotta walls, and a pink Tennessee marble floor, and is crowned with a five-story, barrel-vaulted atrium ceiling.Opening onto the hall is the Union Gallery, a 3,500-square-foot room ideal for V.I.P. receptions, lounges, ceremonies, and meetings. The great hall is a truly unique Chicago venue. With a 115-foot ceiling, dramatically subtle architecture, and unobstructed space, the possibilities for creative versatility in event design are virtually unlimited. The rich history and beauty of the great hall have made it a popular location for feature films including The UntouchablesMy Best Friend’s Wedding, and Flags of Our Fathers.
